The monastery of Zica was founded by King Stefan the First Crowned, a son of Stefan Nemanja, from 1206 to 1221. An important role in the completion of the works and later painting belonged to his brother St Sava. The church is dedicated to the Ascension of Christ After gaining independence in 1219, the monastery became the seat of the Serbian archbishopric. In 1217, King Stefan was crowned there.

Zica vas built after the model of older Raska churches. The main section of the temple is divided in three traves, so that the eastern one is within the altar space, the dome is over the middle one, while on the western trave, a spacious narthex was added on later, along with a tower.
